Shown in our logo, the tortoise or turtle, is an enigmatic and highly symbolic creature; in ancient mythical lore the turtle spends life exploring the universal ocean while carrying the earth on its back. As a creature of two elements, the turtle reflects an ability to adapt and flourish. In Chinese culture, the tortoise is the symbol of heaven and earth, its shell compared to the vaulted heaven and the underside to the flat disc of the earth. It is regarded as an immortal creature and one of the protector gods of the four areas, Zhenwu in Chinese Taoism, and in particular, the turtle is referred to as the “dark warrior” of the north. car-a-pace: a hard bony or chitinous outer covering, or shield, such as the fused dorsal plates of a turtle or the portion of the exoskeleton covering the head and thorax of a crustacean or tortoise.
